Far East To Host Thai Food Festival

Far East, the specialty Oriental fine dine restaurant at Rodas Ecotel in Hiranandani Gardens, Powai is hosting a 10-day Thai food festival beginning Thursday 28th September.

Executive Chef Dharmesh Katira and Master Chef Thomas Lai have together created a special menu keeping in mind both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food connoisseurs.

The restaurant will wear a traditional Thai look during the festival. Says Sunny Sriram, the GM, "Thai food is the most popular cuisine after Chinese and Italian here and though it has a distinct similarity with our own Malabar cuisine, it still remains exotic and enchanting. Since we already promote authentic Far Eastern food, this time we are focusing on Thai."

In Thai cuisine, sweet, sour, spicy, and salty play a balancing act together where one flavor never supersedes the other. The diverse climates of Thailand, from the mountains in the north to the seaside in the south make for an equally diverse Thai menu. Influences that are centuries old come from both eastern and western countries. Coconut milk, seafood and fruit all play an important role in this cuisine as do basil, lemon grass, bird chilli and Thai ginger. Dishes can be refined and adjusted to suit all tastes.

The elaborate menu at the festival comprises of all courses. The starters in the menu include Gra thong thong je (crispy corn and green peas shells), Satay je (aubergine and mushroom satay), Pho pia je (spicy thai vegetable rolls), Beek kai laow dang (red wine chicken wings), Phat hi malai (stir fried chicken with burnt chilli and cashewnuts). Some of the soups available are Tom yom phak (vegetable soup), Tom kha hed (mushroom soup with coconut milk) Kow thom kai (clear chicken and rice soup).

For the main course choices range from Thai bamboo shoots with cucumber stirfried vegetables with tofu, okra hot basil, Bom botto pahi (sweet and spicy eggplant), traditional thai curries in yellow, green and red, ginger chicken, curied barbecue chicken etc and a large variety of rice and noodles to go along with it.

The desserts include Glauy thod (crispy banana fritters served with choice of ice cream), Khanom thuey (steamed coconut cakes) Sangkhaya (coconut custard) etc. The festival is on for both lunch and dinner. The regular menu is also available.
