Aura showcases traditional martial arts from
Kerala
Aura, the RestroBar at
Rodas, the designer boutique ecotel, Powai is
showcasing the glorious ancient traditional
Martial Arts form of Kerala- Kalaripayattu.
A troupe consisting of six adults, 2 children
and a master has been invited to perform live
at the restrobar.
Several styles of Kalaripayattu exist in Kerala,
and the troupe visiting Rodas come from an idyllic
hamlet from the region of Vadakkara, Northern
Kerala. They are from a school of Martial arts
called Kadatthanadu KPCGM Kalari Sangham of
Puduppanam. The troupe shall perform at Aura
from 16 th August until 24th August. The show
shall start every evening from 9 pm and with
breaks in between, shall continue until 10.30
pm.
Kalaripayattu combines the dynamic skills of
attack & defense and the power of the secret
knowledge of the body, with a scientific system
of healing and therapy based on allied disciplines
like Ayurveda.
It literally means acquired skill of art. 'Kalari'
means school or arena and 'payattu' is skill
training or practice. Inherent in the training
for combat is a system for healing. One inflicts
upon an opponent an injury that one also has
the capacity to heal. It encompasses an invigorating
Ayurvedic herbal treatment for chronic ailments
like arthritis etc. A massaging regimen which
repair physical damages and makes the body young
is also a part of it.
The training in martial art begins with an oil
massage of the body, which goes on until the
body is agile and supple. Feats like chattom
(jumping) ottam (running) marichhil (somersault)
etc are then taught followed by lessons in the
use of weapons such as dagger swords, spears,
maces, the bow and arrow and so on. The training
system is divided into four sections meythari
(body control exercise) kolthari (training with
wooden sticks) ankathari (metallic and heavy
wooden weapons). The philosophy of this martial
art stretches the limits of the human body to
degree where non-ballistic weapons from wooden
staff to spear sword and shield become extensions
of the body.
The ideology of self protection through skill
and stringent self discipline is as necessaary
in today's world as it has been for thousands
of years in tribal Kerala. At the outset of
the 60th year of Independence celebrated by
the nation, the demonstration of the traditional
martial arts at RODAS signifies two ends: one
being the necessity to remain mentally and physically
fit in todays' strife-ridden environment; the
other is the appreciation of our glorious heritage,
thereby rendering homage to our motherland.
